Blueberry Yogurt Breakfast Bowl

Look at that COLOUR!! Doesn’t it just make you want to dive in and gobble this up for breakfast?

I could give you the nutrition lecture highlighting all the reasons to make your own fruit- flavoured yogurt bowl at home, but I bet you already know that doing so means you’ll eat less added sugar and more fibre, and you’ll save money too!

Skip the lecture with your kids too, and instead focus on all the beautiful and fun reasons why they can make this themselves. Let your kids mix up their own vibrant “purple potion” from the simplest ingredients, and invite them to pause and marvel at the magical way that plain white yogurt takes on a vibrant purple hue and sweet flavour as you stir in the blueberries. Stop and notice the swirls and whirls as they mix it up and the colour of the yogurt changes. Invite them to taste it as is and let them add a bit of maple syrup or honey until it tastes “just right” to them. This supports them in tuning into their tastebuds and developing an appreciation for the flavours of food.

There’s really no recipe required. Here’s how to make your easy yogurt breakfast bowl:

Start with plain yogurt - whatever type you prefer. Stir in some thawed frozen blueberries and let kids top their bowl with their favourite granola or other toppings.

Why use frozen berries?

  • The juice (& colours) pop out more than if you use fresh berries

  • They’re super convenient to keep on hand in your freezer

  • Frozen fruits are usually packed straight from the harvest, so they’re actually super fresh!

  • They’re usually less expensive than fresh berries - I always stock up when they’re on sale.

  • Bonus: the fruit might be grown closer to your home!

Yummy Topping ideas:

  • rolled oats

  • granola

  • prepared cereal

  • dried fruit

  • nuts or seeds

  • toasted coconut

  • sprinkles

  • chocolate chips

  • diced fresh fruit

Of course, this works great with other fruit too - if you use raspberries, you’ll end up with a pink passion bowl!

Invite your kids to come up with their own ideas and even give their creation a name. Snap a picture and share it on social media - make sure to tag us @rainbowplate and #myrainbowplate

Enjoy!
